This shareware terminal program is the best terminal I have ever used,
and that includes Amiga and PC Commercial offerings. Matthew Desmond, the
author, is asking $25 dollars, and my recommendation is BUY THIS PRODUCT
before he wakes up and raises the price.
The reason I first looked at DesTerm was its ANSI support. (A note of
thanks to Dick Heckert for the DesTerm disks). ANSI is a popular character
set definition in the PC and Telecomming world. It allows simple graphics,
color and other effects to be displayed on any computer that supports it.
Of course, the C-64 and C-128 also have color and simple character
graphics, and BBSs that support this, but ANSI, coming from the MSDOS camp,
is of course seen far more often.
Desterm fully supports ANSI, as well as VT102, and C-64/C-128 color
graphics. I have tried DesTerm on many PC and Amiga bulletin boards and it
performed flawlessly, displaying the ANSI graphics and colors perfectly.
OF course, a good term program also has many other features, and
DesTerm seems to have them all: large text buffer, autodialing, support for
Hayes and Commodore modems, support for Xmodem, Ymodem, Punter and text
uploading and downloading, support for various disk drives and printers,
and powerful scripting. The author even claims support for up to 9600
baud, using a RS232 cartridge such as the one from CMD, although I don't
have the good fortune of having one to try.
Moreover, DesTerm uses a neat and easy to use menu system, which
supports keyboard and 1351 mouse. A few clicks of the mouse button are
enough to accomplish any task.
Another feature is 'overlays'. This is a sort of a modular 'hook'
that ambitious programmers can use to add features to DesTerm. One I know
of is an overlay to improve the display of 50 rows of text on the screen.
I have used DesTerm to log on to many Amiga and PC Bulletin Boards,
and have downloaded a number of Amiga programs, (using Big Blue Reader to
transfer them to the Amiga), and have yet to run into a problem.
If you're looking for a powerful, inexpensive and easy to use terminal
program , particularly one that supports ANSI and 2400-9600 baud modems,
you can't go wrong with this one!
